WHAT ARE THE USES OF PROSCAR?

Proscar 5mg tablets are utilized to address symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate), aiming to reduce the prostate size and diminish the risk of urinary retention due to restricted urine flow as the prostate enlarges. The treatment with Proscar 5mg tablets also aims to alleviate symptoms of BPH, consequently reducing the necessity for surgery. Additionally, as a secondary effect of its primary function, Proscar 5mg tablets are employed in the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). They facilitate increased hair growth and prevent further hair loss across all regions of the scalp, including the frontal area. While this can reverse balding in men experiencing mild to moderate hair loss, it does not restore hair that has been lost for an extended period. Notably, Proscar 5mg tablets are not prescribed for addressing hair loss in women.

HOW DOES PROSCAR FUNCTION?

Proscar 5mg tablets comprise finasteride 5 mg, which selectively inhibits the activity of the enzyme type II 5α-reductase. This enzyme conversion of the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the primary androgen responsible for the development and growth of the prostate gland. In addition to triggering benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate), DHT is also implicated in hair loss. Proscar 5mg tablets work by reducing DHT levels in the blood, thus interrupting the stimulation of prostate growth in individuals with BPH, leading to prostate shrinkage. In hair follicles, DHT causes a gradual shrinking process, resulting in smaller and thinner hairs, eventually leading to hair loss. Proscar 5mg tablets halt this balding process by obstructing DHT accumulation in the hair follicles of the scalp, allowing normal hair growth.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN PROSCAR?

Proscar 5mg tablets contain the active ingredient finasteride 5mg, utilized for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate) and reversal of male pattern hair loss. They are formulated with other ingredients including lactose, pregelatanised maize (corn) starch, sodium starch glycollate, iron oxide yellow CI77492, docusate sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, hydroxypropylcellulose, titanium dioxide, talc, and indigo carmine CI73015 (aluminium lake).

TREATING BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA AND HAIR LOSS WITH PROSCAR

Proscar 5mg tablets containing finasteride 5mg are employed in treating BPH by inhibiting the enzyme type II 5α-reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT. This reduces DHT levels in the blood, leading to prostate shrinkage and mitigating the risk of urinary retention and restricted urine flow associated with enlarged prostate. The treatment improves symptoms and diminishes the need for surgery. Additionally, Proscar 5mg tablets are used for male pattern hair loss treatment, reversing the balding process by blocking DHT buildup in scalp hair follicles, thus facilitating normal hair growth. However, for hair loss treatment, a lower dosage of finasteride, typically 1mg, is recommended, thus necessitating the division of the Proscar 5mg tablet. However, it is advised against by Inhouse pharmacy due to concerns regarding dose accuracy.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF PROSCAR?

While Proscar 5mg tablets are generally well-tolerated, there is a possibility of experiencing side effects, typically mild in nature. These include temporary impotence (while under treatment), decreased semen volume, and low libido. Less frequently reported side effects encompass breast tenderness and enlargement (gynecomastia), itchy skin rash, hypersensitivity reactions (facial or lip swelling), and testicular pain.

WHEN SHOULD PROSCAR NOT BE USED?

Proscar should not be utilized if:

  • You are a woman, as it is not intended for female use and can pose risks to an unborn child.
  • You are allergic to Proscar or any other medication containing finasteride.

HOW SHOULD PROSCAR BE ADMINISTERED?

Proscar 5mg tablets should be taken once daily with a glass of water, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU TAKE PROSCAR?

Continue taking Proscar 5mg tablets for the duration recommended by your doctor, which may span over three months or longer. It may take several months for noticeable improvements, and discontinuation during this period may result in symptom recurrence. Similarly, for hair loss treatment, continued use is necessary, as new hair growth may take six months or more to become apparent.

MISSED DOSE OF PROSCAR

If you miss a dose of Proscar 5mg tablets, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Skip the missed dose if this is the case. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.
